Materials Used For Reconstruction of Breast
The implants utilized in breast reconstruction are made with a layer of
silicon and silicon gel or saline filled in it. Other type of materials
used are not found safe and effective so saline and silicone are used
Silicone elastomer used for the external layer looks like rubber and the
leaking risk is minimized.
Saline is safe since even when it leaks it does not create any problems
but implants filled with saline do not give realistic breast reconstruction
as the implants filled with silicone. Leakage is possible and hence wrinkles
compared to silicone implants and taking X Rays becomes slightly difficult.
The most commonly used Silicone Implant in UK contains a silicone gel
bag covered with slender silicone shell. Many varied types with different
texture, shapes and smoothness are available which are flexible and soft
resembling original breast and solid silicone gel or supple liquid silicone
is kept inside. Implants of cohesive get are used recently.
Silicone is preferred to saline due to the natural feeling it gives. Surgery
is required to replace ruptured implant.
The radio grapher has to be informed earlier to get clear x Rays so that
the mammograms can be read easily. Capsular contracture is the important
problem which occurs if the patient smokes, have radiotherapy or develop
infection.
The pros and cons of using Saline or Silicone implants should be discussed
with the doctor before deciding which one to choose. If proper care is
taken the longevity of the implant increases and looks natural.
